Fourways High cheerleaders gears up for tough competition

The cheerleading team from Fourways High School is hoping to make some major strides during the upcoming competition.

The Fourways Legends Cheerleaders started the year with a bang when they competed in two competitions under the ‘co-education’ division. They achieved great results and couldn’t be prouder of themselves.

The team secured third place in Gauteng for their first competition on March 2, and then fourth place in the same competition in the second round, which took place on March 16.

Jeanelle Ludick, the head of visual arts at Fourways High School and of the cheerleading team said that preparing for the competitions is not as easy. She said it required four hours of practise each week.

“It can be very tiring when it comes to practising the entire display, we often see ourselves improve towards the end of each practice which keeps the team motivated and confident for competitions.”

“We aim to place within the top three for every competition. We are competing against schools that have been doing this for a much longer time. We use our results to stay motivated and to improve on our skills because we know we are capable of doing better each time.”

“The competitions are really fun and entertaining, watching people do tricks that you didn’t know were possible is very motivating. These competitions are important as it provide us with exposure and experience on the performance field, and the scores from each competition total up towards our eligibility for provincials which will be held on May 25.

“They are also crucial to help us understand where we stand as a team and how much work we still need to do to be in top shape for the even more serious competition that we will face at nationals.”

When asked what would winning mean for the team, she said it would show that all the hours they put into the routines, the times that a lift fell and got up again, injuries, and times they felt like their muscles were giving up were worth it.

“The competitions are really fun and enjoyable as we get to see the other teams perform and cheer them on as they do for us. Watching the tertiary teams perform is the best because we get to see them do really complex routines.”

The team will be performing at St Dominic’s College on April 20 and are calling for some support from the community!
