Fourways equestrian goes from pony rider to championship
With 25 years of experience and a decade of teaching, Claude Graunke transforms her students’ lives at the Cavaliere Equine Centre.
Claudia Graunke (28) is an equestrian with 25 years experience riding, and 10 years experience teaching other equestrians. A registered coach with the South African Sports Coaching Association (SASCA), she has dedicated her life to equestrian sports.
Her journey began at three when her aunt gifted her pony lessons at Broadacres Nursery School. Little did anyone know that this seemingly simple gift would spark a lifelong passion for horses.

Graunke’s first pony, Lucy, and her first horse, Fresca, were challenging rides that taught her invaluable lessons about patience and understanding. By age 12, Graunke engaged in horsemanship courses, including her first Tellington Touch workshop, which deepened her understanding of horses’ unique personalities and behavioral needs.

Seeking further knowledge and experience, Graunke traveled to Italy and the UK to ride, and worked at racing yards in Scotland and a showjumping yard in England. “I mucked out stables, rode challenging horses, and learned the ins and outs of running a yard. I came back to South Africa during the pandemic, confident and with more experience under my belt,” she said.
On her return, Graunke transformed her vision into reality, establishing the Cavaliere Equine Centre in Fourways. The facility now features two riding arenas, 32 stables, a lunging arena, a 300m track, and large paddocks for the horses.

The journey of a young rider can be challenging, often requiring substantial financial support from dedicated parents. Graunke recalls the emotional highs and lows of competition. “These experiences either make or break you. It’s about passion and the willingness to persevere.”
For Graunke her age has always been a challenge for her. “People are quick to say you are too young and lack experience, but I continue to learn, attending courses and soaking up insights from experienced coaches.”

Graunke emphasizes that horse riding is a humbling sport, where one can feel on top one day and face challenges the next. “It instills resilience and grounding,” she said, acknowledging the emotional journey that riders undertake. With nine shows scheduled before the year’s end, Graunke is gearing up for an exciting season with her students.
For Graunke, equestrian sport goes beyond winning; it’s about fostering a love for riding and its challenges. “I encourage anyone, regardless of age, to give riding a try.” At Cavaliere Equine Centre, she strives to create an environment that nurtures growth and joy in equestrian pursuits, focusing on the journey rather than just the trophies.
