This year’s theme: ‘The Power of Options’, flags the importance of having diverse contraceptive choices available to enable individuals to take control of their futures.

Witkoppen Clinic joined the occasion to recognize the transformative power of family planning and its impact on empowering individuals, families, and communities by sharing valuable information as they celebrate the day.

The clinic’s Sbonga Shange said, “as part of our ongoing commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare services, we are excited to expand our offerings with the Copper T IUD, an innovative and highly effective option for long-term contraception, complementing our existing family planning services. Whether you are looking for a short-term solution or long-term contraception, we strive to cater to the unique needs of each woman.

“We are proud to be at the forefront of reproductive healthcare and look forward to continuing our mission to provide accessible and high-quality medical services to the community. With the addition of the Copper T IUD, we aim to further enhance our dedication to empowering women in their reproductive choices.”

Thembi Makhombothi, the head of preventative department at the clinic, said the potential side effects or risks associated with the Copper T IUD is that a woman may experience a little pain after insertion.

“We make sure to monitor our patients and will give pain relief medication if necessary for 24 hours. Occasionally the first menstruation may be heavier than usual, but this settles down thereafter.”

She said the Copper T IUD is safe and can also be used by women who have not had children, as long as there is no contra-indication found by the woman’s doctor or the clinic nurses.

“The contraception is suitable for all ages ie: adolescents, premenopausal women, married and unmarried women, even breastfeeding. Witkoppen Clinic’s health care workers evaluate all women to ensure the Copper T IUD is a suitable method. If a woman has fibroids alternative contraceptive methods are preferred.”
