The incident, which has left the community in shock, has brought to light ongoing concerns about the persistent issue of speeding cars, particularly along the lower stretch of Inchanga Road.

Local ward councillor Mark Van der Merwe, from Ward 115, has stepped up to address these safety concerns. “Residents have been raising issues about speeding drivers for some time now.

“Following the recent horrific accident, a community member approached me to take action and initiate a petition for traffic calming measures at this intersection.”

While this specific accident stands out, it is not the first time that the Memorial and Inchanga intersection has witnessed dangerous incidents, primarily attributed to speeding and reckless driving.

Van der Merwe emphasised that traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps or enhanced signage, could significantly reduce the risk of future accidents. “These measures are designed to slow vehicles down and encourage responsible driving.

“Implementing traffic calming can make a substantial difference in preventing further tragedies.”

To drive this petition forward, Van der Merwe plans to present the results directly to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) inspectorate responsible for traffic calming measures.
