Diepsloot lyricist Thabang Rapao uses fast-paced music to inspire local youth
Able to write and deliver a verse in under 20 minutes, a local songwriter turns his rapid-fire lyrics into positive life lessons.
Diepsloot lyricist Thabang ‘Thabza Lepara’ Rapao can write and deliver a verse in less than 20 minutes, whether the beat is emotional, fast-paced or simply built for a good vibe.
For Rapao, music has always been more than entertainment; it is a way to speak about the realities facing young people and remind them that their circumstances do not have to define their future. “Growing up, I was just a kid who loved music and words,” says Rapao. “I was always that person who paid attention to what was happening around me, in my home, in the streets, especially with the youth. It feels natural. I don’t force it. I just let my thoughts and emotions flow, and somehow they turn into rhymes.”

His passion for writing developed naturally. He says words often come to him as soon as he hears a beat, allowing him to turn his thoughts and emotions into rhymes without forcing the process. However, his journey has not been without challenges. One of his biggest frustrations has been getting people to look beyond the sound and understand the message behind his music. “Sometimes they just want a vibe, but I want to give fire and lessons,” he says. “I felt like if I have this gift to write and to speak, I have to use it.”
Instead of allowing this to discourage him, he used it to sharpen his writing and strengthen his purpose. His music is particularly aimed at young people who may be struggling with direction or facing pressure to become involved in crime, vandalism and other negative activities. Rapao hopes his music can entertain while also leaving listeners with something meaningful.

Looking ahead, the young lyricist remains focused on improving his craft while staying true to his message. “If my music can put fire in a track and put sense in someone’s head, then I’m doing my job. Every verse is an opportunity to turn words into more than music. It is a chance to reach someone who needs to hear it.”
