Councillor proposes community-led discussion to find solutions for a safer Guy Fawkes

Councillor Annette Deppe raises concerns about Guy Fawkes' impact on safety, animal welfare, and community well-being.

As the annual Guy Fawkes celebrations approach, councillor Annette Deppe, from Ward 132, is calling attention to the often-overlooked consequences of this traditional event.
While many look forward to the festive night, Deppe said there are adverse effects on certain groups within the community if it is not done properly.

“Guy Fawkes is a tradition that many enjoy, but we must recognise the potential harm it can cause. It’s crucial we strike a balance between celebrating our traditions and ensuring the safety and well-being of all community members.”

Deppe said that safety concerns surrounding fireworks are a major issue, with reports of injuries and harm resulting from improper handling. Additionally, the loud noises from fireworks can cause significant distress to pets and wildlife.

“Many animals exhibit fear and anxiety during these celebrations, leading to potential harm and disorientation. We must consider the well-being of our four-legged friends during this time.”

She added that the noise and commotion associated with Guy Fawkes also disrupt the peace in neighbourhoods. Leading to heightened stress and anxiety for residents, particularly those with young children, or elderly individuals.

Furthermore, Deppe said she was concerned over the alcohol consumption often involved in these celebrations.

“Guy Fawkes often involves alcohol consumption, which can lead to irresponsible behaviour and altercations. It is important to promote responsible partying to ensure that everyone enjoys the festivities safely.”

She advised event organisers and community leaders to adopt more responsible practices that cater to the diverse community’s needs.

To address these concerns, Deppe proposed a series of community discussions.

“I invite all community members to share their insights and help us find ways to celebrate Guy Fawkes safely and inclusively. Together, we can foster a culture of safety, respect, and celebration. Our traditions should enrich our community, not compromise our well-being.”

Community members are encouraged to participate in the upcoming discussions and share their thoughts on creating a safer, more inclusive Guy Fawkes. For more information, contact councillor Annette Deppe at 082 886 8519.
