Diwali celebrations hit the pool tables at the Billiard Café in Rivonia

On October 31, as South Africa celebrated Diwali, the Billiard Café in Rivonia, with the local pool community, gathered for a special celebration: the Diwali Spectacular, a father and sons pool challenge.

This unique event featured two families, each showcasing their skills and camaraderie in the spirit of the Festival of Lights.

The Munsamy family, hailing from the South of Johannesburg, was led by Basil Munsamy, accompanied by his two enthusiastic sons, Alonso and Elcano.

They faced off against the Pillay family, who represented the Fourways area, with father, Shane Pillay, and his two pool-loving sons, Wade and Mikyle, ready to make their mark on this festive occasion.

The purpose of the Diwali Spectacular was not just to engage in friendly competition, but to demonstrate that the world of pool is inclusive and embraces cultural events and commemorative days, such as Diwali.

The night was crafted to bring families together through sport, while honouring the significance of the festival, which symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness.

The format of the competition was designed to showcase each player’s skills in a series of matches. Every player from each family challenged one another in a total of three frames, encompassing two doubles matchups and nine singles matches.

This setup created an action-packed evening filled with thrilling shots and competitive spirit, drawing in attendees who were eager to watch the excitement unfold.

The competition culminated in an impressive victory for the Pillay family, who triumphed over the Munsamy’s with a score of 26–10, showcasing their pool prowess amidst the festive spirit.

As the night came to a close, Wetsi Morake, who provided commentary throughout the event, remarked on the success of the celebration, stating, “Diwali was truly honored and commemorated.”

The event was a resounding affirmation that pool serves as a connector of cultures and communities.

“This event signifies the spirit of unity and joy that Diwali brings, and we are thrilled to have facilitated such a meaningful celebration,” added Morake.
