Douglasdale community rallies together to support fire-affected families in Msawawa

Msawawa Informal Settlement fire victims received aid, all thanks to the Douglasdale CPF's tireless efforts and community donations.

On November 5, Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF), alongside Douglasdale SAPS members, distributed generous donations to Msawawa informal settlement residents who lost their homes in a devastating fire on October 31.

The CPF expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community for their overwhelming response to the appeal for assistance.

“Your kindness and compassion have touched our hearts, demonstrating the strength of our unity,” said the CPF’s public relations officer, Freda Boiles.

On that fateful day, Lizzy Mabena, chairperson of the CPF, received a distress call from a concerned community member seeking assistance in contacting the fire department to respond to a devastating morning blaze.

The affected families receive the donations.

“It was about 20 shack dwellings that caught fire which left many families homeless with little to nothing left. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. With the dry season and little rain, everything was so dry that the fire spread so fast. Fortunately, the fire fighters were able to extinguish the fire. It has left the families devastated, some carrying clothes in bags while others did not have the opportunity to save their belongings because they were at work.”

She said that is why as the CPF took the initiative to reach out to the Douglasdale community and ask for some relief, so they can help the families to get back to their feet. The community did not disappoint.

“We had requested for any unperishable food, second hand clothes, just anything that can help the affected families in getting back on their feet. We are so grateful because the community really showed up and we received even more than we asked for.”
