Rise in road robberies as criminals employ dangerous tactics

Criminals are using increasingly sophisticated and dangerous methods to target motorists and motorcyclists, prompting warnings for drivers to remain vigilant, particularly on certain routes.

A disturbing trend of increasingly cunning and dangerous road robberies is emerging, with criminals devising new tactics to ambush unsuspecting drivers and motorcyclists. These methods range from deploying hazardous objects on the road to deliberately causing accidents, leading to warnings for motorists to exercise extreme caution.

One heartless tactic involves criminals scattering metal spikes or even throwing heavy metal bars from bridges onto the road to puncture tyres or shatter windshields. When drivers are forced to stop to inspect the damage, they become vulnerable to attack. This method not only facilitates robbery but also poses a significant risk of serious injury or even death.

Another worrying tactic specifically targets motorcyclists, particularly those riding delivery bikes for services like Mr D and Uber Eats, who are often perceived as carrying cash. Criminals are reported to be laying ropes across the road, which are then pulled taut as a motorcycle approaches, deliberately tripping the rider off their bike. This not only puts the rider’s life at risk but also allows criminals to steal the motorcycle and any valuables quickly.

A recent incident in Diepsloot, Gauteng, has underscored this growing threat. On May 5, a rope was discovered strategically placed across a road in the area, believed to have been intended to trap and hijack a delivery rider working late. This discovery serves as a stark reminder of the lengths to which criminals are willing to go to carry out these robberies.

Authorities and road safety advocates are urging drivers and riders to be acutely aware of their surroundings and to exercise extreme caution, especially when traveling at night or on less-trafficked roads. Motorists are advised to remain alert for any unusual objects on the road and to avoid stopping in isolated areas if their vehicle is damaged.

The recent incident in Diepsloot highlights the urgent need for increased vigilance amongst road users. Drivers and riders are strongly advised to avoid routes known for criminal activity and to report any suspicious observations to the authorities. Staying informed about potential risks and taking proactive measures can significantly reduce the likelihood of falling victim to these dangerous and increasingly prevalent road robbery tactics.
