Councillor steps in with sand to fill potholes

Ward 94 councillor David Foley grabbed a spade and filled potholes himself on Mulbarton Road to protect motorists while waiting for JRA to conduct proper repairs.

While the city struggles with potholes, Ward 94 councillor David Foley still advocates for the use of sand to temporarily fill potholes while waiting for Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to conduct proper repairs.
Foley recently stepped in himself, filling about 10 potholes with sand, after residents complained about damage to their cars while driving on Mulbarton Road in Beverly.
Foley shared the state of the road. “It is bad, with multiple potholes and even large parts of tar missing. We can’t just leave it like this while we wait for JRA.”

He explained that the damaged road poses a real danger for motorists, forcing drivers to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid potholes or risk damaging their vehicles. “Swerving to avoid a pothole could easily cause an accident. I don’t want someone getting hurt while waiting for repairs.”
While the sand used to fill the potholes is a temporary measure, Foley said it was necessary to reduce immediate risks. “Using sand aligns with JRA’s protocols as it can be easily removed when the agency comes to do proper repairs.”
Foley added that Mulbarton Road, along with Robert Bruce Road, has been prioritised by the JRA depot manager for repairs, although no timeline has been confirmed yet. “I have faith in the depot manager in Region A to resolve these issues, and I am following up regularly.”

As frustration grows among residents over service delivery delays, Foley acknowledged that many feel the need to step in themselves, but advised the use of sand for temporary repairs. “There have been a number of delays based on various projects from the mayor and MMC.”
Despite the challenges, Foley highlighted some progress. “I did get two roads resurfaced with three more to go, and the work on Richard Road and Bushwillow Road is progressing nicely.”
Foley urged residents to remain patient as he continues to push for solutions.
