JRA investigates water discharge on Duff Road in Fourways

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has completed critical pothole repairs along Inchanga Road, while further steps are being taken to resolve persistent water issues affecting Duff Road.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has completed permanent pothole repairs along Inchanga Road in Craigavon, but just as one issue is resolved, another has emerged, in the form of a persistent leak on nearby Duff Road.

Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe confirmed the completion of repairs along Inchanga Road, particularly the badly damaged section below Randa Road. “I’ve visited the site, with our JRA ward inspector and ward manager, to confirm the work was completed.” However, during the same inspection, concerns were raised about water continuously flowing onto Duff Road, threatening the long-term integrity of the new roadworks.

“Uncontrolled water flow weakens the surface, leading to rapid deterioration, even on newly repaired roads,” van der Merwe explained. “If we don’t fix the source, we’ll be back here again in a few months. We’ve identified a complex that appears to be unlawfully discharging water into the road. JRA is investigating the matter further to take appropriate action.”

Van der Merwe confirmed that, after visiting Craigavon with the JRA team, they visited several complexes and properties, in order to ascertain the source of the water flowing onto Duff Street. “The site inspection, with JRA, confirmed that the structure on Duff Street is a kerbside outlet (KO), not an inlet. It’s designed to handle emergency water flow, not continuous discharge.

“Fresh water is exiting the KO, but it’s not coming from nearby properties. Johannesburg Water and JRA will investigate further, up at two of the manholes [on the road], to identify where this fresh water is coming from.”

He also urges residents to continue reporting any new potholes to JRA, and water issues to Johannesburg Water.
