Douglasdale SAPS tracks, arrests suspects across precinct

Douglasdale SAPS has made significant headway in tackling crime, with a wave of arrests, major convictions, and collaborative efforts that are delivering real results. From housebreaking syndicates to armed robbery suspects.

The Douglasdale Police Station has ramped up its crime-fighting efforts, making significant progress with a string of arrests.

From swift responses to reported crimes to the diligent pursuit of suspects through ongoing investigations, the station’s hard work is paying off, offering relief to residents and sending a strong message to criminals.

Police have apprehended suspects linked to assault, fraud, shoplifting, perjury, possession of counterfeit liquor, drugs, and illegal immigration, among others.

“All suspects have appeared in court,” confirmed station commander Brigadier Veeshani Arikum.

She added that in one notable case, the Randburg Magistrates’ Court handed down a 25-year direct imprisonment sentence to a suspect convicted of house robbery.

“Sergeant Tankiso Madlebe, the investigating officer, worked diligently to secure this conviction,” Arikum said.

In a separate matter, Douglasdale Crime Prevention officers assisted their counterparts in Lenasia to trace and arrest a suspect who had robbed a police officer of a private vehicle.

“The suspect was arrested in possession of an unlicensed firearm and has since appeared in the Lenasia Magistrates’ Court.”

Another major victory came when two suspects responsible for a spate of housebreakings in the Dainfern area were finally brought to justice.

This success, which dates back to coordinated efforts that began in 2021, was achieved through collaboration between Douglasdale SAPS and private security companies.

“Back in 2021, we noticed a sharp rise in housebreakings around Dainfern. Through coordinated efforts with local security companies, we managed to identify two suspects, and within a week of intensified operations, we had the first suspect in custody.”

The first arrest led to the discovery of stolen goods in the suspect’s vehicle. He was convicted, sentenced to 15 years, and will be deported after serving his sentence.

The second suspect, described as a more prolific offender, was arrested in October 2022. He pleaded guilty to more than 30 counts of housebreaking, received a 15-year sentence, was declared unfit to possess a firearm, and will also be deported once his time is served.

Officers who played key roles in the operation were awarded certificates of excellence for their contributions. Among them was Sergeant Charity Maswanganyi, who expressed pride in the recognition.

“I’m very happy about the certificate. It shows that I’m making an impact, but it’s not just me; this success came from teamwork. With support from Brigadier Arikum and the Fourways community, we brought criminals to justice. It proves that when the community works with us, we can do so much more.”
