Witkoppen learners receive new school shoes
Walking the Walk initiative delivered 90 brand-new pairs of school shoes to Witkoppen Primary School.
The grounds of Witkoppen Primary School were alive with joy and gratitude on August 14, as the Douglasdale SAPS, the NCVT, the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF), and local sponsors came together to deliver 90 pairs of brand-new school shoes to learners in need.

For many children, the neatly packaged shoes were more than just footwear; they were a symbol of dignity, pride, and recognition. “Mandela Day is about action. Today, we are not just talking about change; we are walking it, literally and figuratively. These shoes are a step toward confidence, comfort, and showing our children that they are seen and supported,” said Freda Boiler from the CPF.
The Walking the Walk initiative was made possible through the generosity of local businesses who answered the CPF’s call for support. The sponsors included 24/7 Security, Aircon Centre, Heriz Gallery, Innovation Hub Group, Night Guard, Thompsons Security, TRSS, and Watercombe Farm.

Brett Fisher, from TRSS, highlighted how the initiative resonated with their values. “When we heard about Walking the Walk and the incredible work they’re doing, we knew it was something we wanted to support. Something as simple as a pair of school shoes can make a huge difference in a child’s confidence, attendance, and school experience. Seeing the children’s excitement reminded us why community involvement matters. Those smiles are something we’ll never forget.”

Michael Tuck, from the Aircon Centre, shared how the project opened her eyes to everyday needs. “We see children walking to and from school daily, and never noticed their shoes until this initiative. Many people struggle with the basics. We hope that these children feel a sense of pride and inclusion, and that their parents have one less worry. That’s a start.”
“Freda, from the CPF, told us some children didn’t have school shoes, and we saw an immediate opportunity to make a difference. It was humbling to see how something so simple could bring such delight,” said Maj Saffari, from Heriz Gallery.

Boiler extended a special thanks to Warrant Officer Nicholas Mokwena, of Douglasdale SAPS, for his unwavering support in bringing the event to life.
