WATCH: Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital stops Lonehill traffic for lost porcupine
Forget taxis, a young porcupine caused a real traffic jam in Lonehill. In the middle of peak-hour chaos, the team from JWVH jumped into action to steer him away from danger.
While most people were dodging taxis and traffic lights on their way to work, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital (JWVH) team found themselves dodging something else entirely, the sharp end of the quills of a lost young porcupine.
There he was, dashing across Lonehill Boulevard in the middle of peak-hour chaos, quills raised like a spiky warning sign. Cars swerved, commuters gawked, and, for a moment, his chances of survival looked slim.

That’s when the JWVH team pulled off their best action-hero impression. Calm in the chaos, they stepped into traffic, waving cars to a halt and gently herding the prickly pedestrian away from danger. Drivers slowed, curious eyes followed, and then, against all odds, the porcupine paused.
Wendy Willson, from JWVH, said: “The most heartwarming moment during the porcupine rescue was when the prickly fellow suddenly realised that crawling into our nice, dark, safe animal crate was a much better option than running through morning rush hour traffic, dodging cars.”
The porcupine was treated with a check-up, a snack upon arrival at the hospital, and finally, a much-needed nap.

Dr Jessica van der Merwe, who examined him as he slept, summed it up beautifully. “It’s always a privilege to be able to get so close to these animals. Porcupines are such interesting medical cases, and I’m always excited to learn what each one has to teach me.”

Weeks later, stronger and calmer, the porcupine traded his crate for freedom. The team watched as he explored his new home, a wild haven with food in abundance and porcupine-perfect burrows waiting for him. Willson said it was the most heartwarming moment of his recovery.

JWVH is a one-of-a-kind, registered non-profit wildlife veterinary hospital and recovery centre located in Glenferness. “We provide specialised, species-appropriate medical care, rewilding, and legal protection for indigenous wildlife… Free of charge,” said Willson. “The JWVH is redefining how we care for South Africa’s wildlife. Through pioneering veterinary work, legal enforcement, and education, we are defending, not only the iconic, but also the overlooked.
“Our patients, on just a normal day, could include a trafficked pangolin, an orphaned serval, a poisoned owl, a raptor needing lifesaving surgery, a burnt snake, a displaced porcupine, and even a rescued scorpion.”
The truth is, the community makes these rescues possible. A blanket, a tin of paint (smooth green), a trailer, or a simple donation, every gesture helps write another success story for JWVH.
In the end, the conservation isn’t just about saving species; it’s about compassion, and, sometimes, compassion looks like pulling traffic to a standstill so one spiky little wanderer can find his way home.
