Duff Street leak drags on for six months
Despite investigations by Johannesburg Water and the Johannesburg Roads Agency, a leak on Duff Street has been flowing for six months, damaging the road and testing residents' patience.
Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe is worried about a pipe that has been leaking for six months on Duff Street in Craigavon.
The leak is causing visible road damage and raising safety concerns. Although JW and the JRA inspected the site a month ago, the issue remains unresolved, leaving residents increasingly frustrated.

On September 5, Van der Merwe visited the site with Fourways Review, explaining the complexity of the issue.

What initially appeared to be rainwater runoff is in fact fresh water continuously discharging through a kerbside outlet – a structure designed to handle occasional overflow, not constant flow.

“This has been going on for six months. When did we last have rain? So this is fresh water coming from somewhere up there. One of those complexes is leaking underground into the stormwater drain. And what that now does, because of the continual flow, is damage the road. Look at how it has started to crack and fall apart here,” said Van der Merwe.
He pointed to potholes, cracks and green slime forming across the road, warning that the situation is a hazard for drivers.

On September 10, Van der Merwe met on site with officials from JW, JRA, the Urban Inspector, and the Region E CRUM director.
“A test revealed the water is groundwater entering the stormwater system higher up Duff Street, then exiting at the kerbside outlet as designed.”
“I have requested the results of that test to share with JRA. As the commitment timelines are reached, I will provide ongoing feedback,” said Van der Merwe.
Fourways Review will follow up on the results and progress of the repairs on the outflow kerbside outlet. More information will be provided once it becomes available.
