Heavy, disruptive rain to hit Gauteng on Sunday
Emergency services are on high alert as the weather service upgrades Gauteng to a rare Level 9 severe thunderstorm and heavy rain warning for Sunday.
Gauteng residents have been told to prepare for major disruption tomorrow after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) escalated the province’s severe weather warning to Level 9 just before 14:00 on Saturday.
The upgrade, issued at 13:50 pm on November 16, warns of heavy and disruptive rain that could trigger localised flooding, damage to infrastructure and extremely dangerous driving conditions across all metros and districts.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services said heavy, disruptive rain is expected across Gauteng, which can lead to significant impacts. Residents are urged to take all necessary precautions as safety is the top priority.
Disaster management teams have been fully activated and remain on high alert to respond to any emergencies.
Residents should:
- Stay indoors and avoid all non-essential travel
- Never attempt to cross flooded roads or bridges
- Clear gutters and drains around properties
- Secure outdoor furniture and loose items
- Keep emergency kits ready in case of power cuts or floodin
Motorists are warned to slow down, switch on headlights and keep a safe following distance. Flooded roads must be avoided at all costs.

The Level 9 warning is in force for Sunday, November 16, with conditions expected to intensify through the day.
