Fourways boutique Barclay & Clegg steps up with dignity-boosting donations

Through a partnership rooted in compassion, Barclay & Clegg in Fourways is ensuring that gender-based violence survivors, young girls, and women rebuilding their lives receive the comfort and confidence they deserve, with gently-used undergarments.

When conversations turn to restoring dignity in vulnerable communities, people often think of food security, shelter, or clothing. Yet, there is a more private and deeply personal need that is often forgotten: The quiet comfort of proper undergarments.

For many women, especially those facing crisis or poverty, this is a basic necessity that remains out of reach.

Barclay & Clegg has long understood the profound role that well-fitted undergarments play in a woman’s daily life.

With boutiques in Brooklyn, Pretoria, and now Fourways Crossing, the brand has built its reputation on personalised fittings, but their commitment extends far beyond their store doors.

Through their partnership with the Kindness Like Confetti non-profit organisation, Barclay & Clegg in Fourways donated high-quality pre-loved undergarments, carefully sorted and prepared to women from severely disadvantaged backgrounds.

These items reached survivors of gender-based violence, women rebuilding their lives after leaving crisis shelters, and young girls growing up in environments where essential support is scarce. “These donations may seem small, said Maureen Esterhuysen, co-owner of Barclay & Clegg, “but to the women who receive them, they represent care, respect, and the assurance that someone sees their worth.”

Her husband, and co-owner, Neil, added: “A properly fitted undergarment can make a woman feel supported, in more ways than one. It affects posture, comfort, confidence — and in many cases, it restores a sense of dignity.”

Barclay & Clegg is also widely recognised for their specialised fittings for women recovering from breast cancer, offering a range of post-surgical and mastectomy options that are designed with compassion and practicality in mind.

Their consultants understand the sensitivity of these journeys and remain committed to ensuring that every woman leaves feeling understood and supported. “Every woman’s story is different,” said Esterhuysen. “Our role is simply to meet her where she is and ensure she walks out feeling better than when she arrived.”
