Councillor raises concerns over repeated flood risk at Platina Bridge

Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe warns that debris building up at Platina Bridge could trigger another flood, saying the crossing has worsened since it was reported, and remains vulnerable after repeated flooding in 2023 and 2025.

Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe has raised serious concerns about the growing build-up of debris at Platina Bridge in Jukskei Park, warning that the blockage could lead to yet another flooding incident if urgent action is not taken.

Van der Merwe said the bridge has not been cleared since he reported the issue more than two weeks ago, and conditions have deteriorated rapidly. “The debris is building up and restricting the flow of water. Are we going to wait for yet another flood before action is taken?”

The bridge has a long history of flooding and damage. It was first severely affected during heavy rains in March 2023, when rising water levels and debris caused significant damage to the structure and surrounding areas.

More recently, on March 5, another major flood struck the bridge, once again washing large logs and debris into the crossing and leaving it vulnerable to further damage.

According to Van der Merwe, repeated debris accumulation remains one of the key contributors to the bridge’s ongoing flood risk, as blockages prevent water from flowing freely during periods of heavy rainfall.

With the rainy season still posing a threat, Van der Merwe is calling for urgent intervention to prevent a repeat of past flooding events and further damage to the already vulnerable Platina Bridge.

The Fourways Review reached out to Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo and Johannesburg Roads Agency for comment on when the debris will be cleared. More information will be provided once it becomes available.
