Celebrate the season sustainably with glass recycling
This festive season, South Africans are encouraged to make simple, eco-friendly choices this December by reusing and recycling glass, turning holiday traditions into meaningful actions that benefit communities and the environment.
December is a time of celebration, family gatherings, and well-earned rest, but it is also the period when household waste reaches its highest levels. This festive season, South Africans are encouraged to celebrate responsibly by making small, sustainable choices that can have a lasting impact on their communities and the environment.
The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) is urging households to include glass recycling as part of their holiday routine. From beverages and sauces to condiments and festive treats, glass packaging plays a central role in December celebrations.

Beyond its elegant appearance and ability to keep food and drinks fresh, glass is endlessly recyclable, making it one of the most sustainable packaging choices available.
TGRC’s key message is simple: ensure that glass finds its way to a glass recycling bank. After festive braais, lunches, or parties, bottles and jars should be rinsed if they contain food residue and stored in a dedicated container. Once full, the glass can be dropped off at a nearby recycling bank during a regular shopping trip. TGRC’s nationwide network of glass banks is designed to be convenient and accessible to the public.
The festive season also presents an opportunity to rethink gift-giving traditions. Instead of single-use wrapping, reusable glass jars can be filled with homemade biscuits, chutneys, sauces, or small personal items, creating thoughtful and sustainable gifts. Glass packaging received during the holidays can also be recycled once it has been reused.

Glass can further enhance festive tables and décor. Bottles and jars can be repurposed as centrepieces, candle holders, dipping bowls, or water decanters, while fairy lights placed inside bottles add a safe, flame-free ambience. Small jars can even be used to serve individual desserts, adding a personal and elegant touch.
December meals often result in leftovers, and glass jars are ideal for storing sauces, desserts, and spices instead of using single-use containers. Once jars and bottles have been reused, they should be recycled to keep glass in the circular economy.
