Diepsloot parents confront primary school over unplaced learners

Parents, accompanied by a community activist visited the school on February 9 after their children were left without placements, warning that they will bring learners to class in uniform if the Department of Education does not act urgently.

Vincent Ndou, chairperson of the Sector 1 Community Police Forum and a community activist in Diepsloot, stepped forward on the morning of February 9, alongside concerned parents, to seek answers at Muzomuhle Primary School after several children were reportedly not placed for the new academic year.

“This has been happening since schools reopened. Parents have been coming to my home in desperation, seeking help to secure placements for their children. I would accompany them to the school, and they were assisted. However, the cases became so frequent that I felt it was necessary for us to regroup and approach the matter collectively.”

He said upon arrival to the school this morning, they were able to speak with the school principal who referred them to the Department of Education.

“During a phone call with the department, we were told they would get back to us as soon as possible. If they fail to provide feedback as promised, we will have no choice but to bathe our children, dress them in their school uniforms, and bring them to school so they can attend classes. These children will soon be writing exams, and every day they are missing out on valuable learning.”

Ndou said the situation was deeply troubling, especially for families who had followed the proper application processes.

“It is painful because we know that there are kids who are undocumented foreign nationals in those classes but yet our people are suffering. They get education which is not going to benefit our country. We need our children in class.”

Mdou said they are now awaiting feedback from education officials, as they continue to advocate for immediate action to secure placements for every child.

The Department of Education has been approached for comment. The article would be updated once received.
