Leak and missing stormwater drain spark safety fears outside Curro Douglasdale
Councillor Chris Santana demands answers as missing stormwater drain and persistent leaks threaten flooding during heavy rains.
Right in front of Curro Douglasdale there is a leak that has been ongoing for over a year, an incomplete road reinstatement and incomplete stormwater drain repairs.
Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana said the delays are putting motorists and residents at risk.

According to Santana, the issues began when Johannesburg Water attended to a burst pipe in front of the school. While the immediate leak was addressed, he said the repair work left behind significant infrastructure damage, including the removal of a stormwater drain that has still not been reinstated.

Santana explained that the missing stormwater drain is a major concern, especially during periods of heavy rainfall, as the area is prone to flooding.
“This was closed up by Joburg Water when there was a burst pipe here. There’s actually a stormwater drain that’s supposed to be here, which obviously is no longer here.
“The conversation that I’ve had with JRA and Joburg Water was to please come and resolve and reinstate the stormwater drain so that the road does not flood when we have rains, because this road floods.”
He further pointed out that the reinstatement work remains incomplete, with kerbing and road repairs still outstanding.

“You can see they still haven’t even reinstated the kerbing, never mind the stormwater system and road reinstatements.

“My frustration is these are long outstanding issues… almost 18 months I’ve been trying to fight for this issue to be resolved.”
Santana added that both the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and Johannesburg Water officials visited the site in September last year and committed to resolving the problem within 30 days. However, he said there has been little to no progress since then.
Fourways Review has reached out to Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and Johannesburg Water more information will be provided once it has been received.
