Balder Road’s three-year struggle continues

A recurring pipe burst on Balder Road has reopened an excavation, damaging the roadway, with Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana warning that poor repair management is leaving residents stuck in a costly cycle of collapse and reinstatement.

Residents on Balder Road are once again facing the frustrations of Johannesburg’s crumbling infrastructure.

A pipe that took nearly three years to repair has burst yet again, leaving the road damaged and potholes unrepaired. Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana said, “This is one of those cases where we finally got it [pipe and excavation] reinstated, but unfortunately, the pipe has burst again.”

He added that attempts to get the potholes repaired have so far been unsuccessful.

“It’s unfortunate that our infrastructure continues to collapse, creating ongoing repairs to work that has already been done. However, if we planned and managed our repairs properly, this wouldn’t be an ongoing issue.”

Santana points out that while two other similar sites have been successfully repaired, this particular pipe has been a recurring headache. Fourways Review reached out to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and Joburg Water for comment.
