Runnymead Road repairs bring relief to Chartwell residents

Phase 1 maintenance is welcomed on Chartwell road, but calls remain for further road fixes.

Chartwell residents expressed relief and gratitude following the completion of phase 1 road maintenance work on Runnymead Road, saying the long-awaited intervention has already made a noticeable difference. In a message shared on behalf of the Chartwell Country Estates community, the Chartwell Board extended its appreciation.

“A huge thank you from the Chartwell Board and residents of Runnymead. We have so many people calling to say thank you for fixing Runnymead Road. I know it’s only phase 1, but it is fantastic.” Ward 96 councillor Rufas Maswazi confirmed that the work formed part of routine maintenance conducted by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

“This was the road maintenance which normally happens once a year by JRA,” Maswazi said.

While residents have welcomed the improvements, many are eager to see phase 2 rolled out. Maswazi said the continuation of the project had been temporarily delayed due to mechanical issues. “I am told one of the machines broke. As soon as it’s back, they will continue.”

Maswazi added that he was not aware of the total budget allocated for the project but expressed optimism about the progress made so far. “On behalf of the community, I am excited and relieved at the same time. It’s been a while since the community has been calling for help.”

Resident Rosalee Nel said things were looking up in the area; however, concerns remain about other problem areas in the suburb. According to Nel, sections of Rietvallei Road heading west and Watercombe Road remain riddled with potholes.
