Illegally parked cars to be towed as police beef up operations for LIV Golf in Fourways

Douglasdale police say they are doing what they do best, intensifying operations and working with Metro police departments to ensure safety and manage heavy traffic during the LIV Golf tournament at Steyn City.

The station commander of the Douglasdale Police Station, Brigadier Veeshani Arikum, said authorities have intensified safety and traffic operations ahead of the LIV Golf Tournament South Africa 2026 to ensure the event runs smoothly.

Arikum confirmed that a coordinated operational plan has been put in place involving multiple law enforcement agencies to manage the expected influx of spectators travelling to Steyn City.

“We have to put an additional safety plan in place to ensure better and increased collaboration between Gauteng Traffic, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), and Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD) to collaborate and ensure the free flow of traffic within the Douglasdale area and vehicles coming in and out of the Douglasdale area,” she said.

She added that the operational plan also prioritises the safety of those attending the international golf event. “Also part of our plan is to ensure the safety of all participants as well as spectators for the event over the four days.”

Traffic operations are expected to ramp up from March 19, when authorities anticipate higher volumes of vehicles travelling through the area.

“Which means there will be high volumes of traffic in and out of the Douglasdale area. We urge all motorists to respect and obey all rules of the road and to work with law enforcement to ensure the smooth running of traffic as well as the event.”

She also warned spectators about strict parking restrictions at the venue.

“There is no parking on site for any vehicles. Anyone entering the area without a valid ticket will be turned away. It will just make it more difficult for them.”

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said in a media statement that no public parking will be available at the venue, and private vehicles will not be permitted to enter the estate.

“If you park illegally on Cedar Road or on Winnie Mandela Drive, your vehicle will be towed,” he warned.

Spectators are strongly encouraged to make use of the official park-and-ride shuttle services operating from several major locations across Gauteng.

Fihla said buses will depart hourly between 08:00 and 20:00 from hubs including Montecasino, Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, Mall of Africa, Sandton City, Melrose Arch, and Greenstone Mall.

“To keep the shuttles moving, we have established dedicated temporary bus lanes along Winnie Mandela Drive and Mnandi Drive and along Cedar Road and Runnymede Avenue.”

Motorists should also expect heavy congestion in the Fourways area between 07:00 and 21:00 daily during the event. He said a full road closure will be implemented along Cedar Road and Runnymede Avenue, with access restricted to permit holders.

Authorities have advised motorists who are not attending the event to avoid the area entirely and use alternative routes such as the N1, N14, or Witkoppen Road.

“For emergencies or traffic updates, members of the public can contact the JMPD Radio Room on 011-375-5911, 011-375-5918, or 0800-002587.”

Residents and motorists travelling through Fourways and Steyn City are being urged to prepare for significant traffic disruptions as the LIV Golf Tournament South Africa 2026 takes place from March 19 to 22.
