Lonehill resident Taryn Townsend has embarked on an incredible journey: running from Johannesburg to Cape Town to raise funds for the MAD Leadership Foundation.
A lifelong lover of long-distance running, Townsend has participated in countless endurance events, including the prestigious Comrades Marathon and a full Ironman. But this adventure is about more than personal achievement, it’s about using her passion to empower South African youth.

“I wanted to see what I was capable of, and knowing I could make a difference for someone else was just the right mix,” she said.
As soon as she was selected for the team, Townsend began her rigorous training regimen, working closely with her coach, Samantha Ferreira. The process was demanding, incorporating running, cycling, and strength training to prepare her both physically and mentally.

“Consistency was key,” she noted, emphasising the importance of preparation leading to such a monumental challenge. To simulate the demanding conditions of the Karoo heat, Townsend made every effort to run during peak temperatures, showcasing her commitment to the cause.

However, Townsend quickly learned that the run was only one part of the experience. Balancing shifts, travel, and logistics meant that sleep was a rare commodity.
“You found yourself running on empty sometimes,” she said, but her spirit never wavered. Each day, she embraced the breathtaking views along the way, noticing the sunrises and sunsets that painted the landscape in stunning colours. More importantly, she cherished the camaraderie with her teammates, many of whom she met for the first time that very day, all united by a shared goal to make a difference.
The MAD Leadership Foundation, which focuses on empowering South African youth through scholarship programs, inspired Townsend throughout her journey. Echoing Nelson Mandela’s powerful belief that, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” she understands the impact that education can have on the lives of young people.

“These are our leaders of tomorrow. We have to invest in our youth to ensure that we have a brighter future,” she said, highlighting the foundation’s mission to nurture not only education but also personal growth.
Townsend’s efforts have ignited a wave of support within the Lonehill community, an area she describes as beautiful and welcoming. “Training here is a joy. We are so lucky to have such a beautiful and safe suburb to train in. ” Her workplace, WebGap, also showed tremendous support and generosity, contributing to her fundraising efforts.
Looking ahead, Townsend is eager to continue her charitable work and seeks new opportunities to give back. As she continues to share her journey, she invites the community to join her in supporting the MAD Leadership Foundation.
