South African Weather Services warns about disruptive rain
Showers are pouring across South Africa's eastern provinces, bringing much-needed rain relief after a scorching heatwave.
The South African Weather Services advises residents to stay indoors and off the roads due to the wet weather conditions in the eastern provinces of the country.
In a media statement, the weather services indicated that as a result of the scorching heat wave, there are several new temperature records, both maximum and minimum, across various provinces.
“In addition to the extreme heat, the central and eastern interior of the country has seen significantly less rainfall this season, contributing to drought-like conditions and low catchment water- levels. Unfortunately, this dry trend is expected to continue over the central interior for the next week with only isolated thunderstorms possible.

“However, the eastern provinces are likely to see a significant improvement in rainfall over the coming days, as tropical moisture and favourable synoptic conditions are expected to bring more rainfall to the areas,” reads the statement.
On December 19, residents of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng should prepare for a porous rainfall, as forecasts indicate widespread showers throughout these regions.

The arrival of tropical moisture will likely result in heavy downpours, potentially leading to localised flooding and difficult driving conditions.
“Disruptions to municipal service such as water and electricity will be impacted amongst major disruptions of traffic flow, possible damage to roads and bridges, and flooding of roads, formal, and informal settlements.”
