HHMZ Dance School dancers cheer more moves and grooves after stellar 2024

Simphiwe Nene, founder of the thriving local dance school, HHMZ, in Fourways, looks back on 2024 with pride and gratitude.

He said their hard work has paid off as they got achievements to maintain their top status.

“This year has been incredible,” Nene said. “All our teams qualified for the Euro Dance competition in Serbia, and one of our teams took home third place overall, winning R2 500. We also qualified for Talent Africa, with all our teams earning gold and platinum awards.”

However, Nene acknowledges that the journey hasn’t been without its challenges.

“Our biggest hurdle has been fundraising for our kids to compete overseas. Unfortunately, we’re still struggling to overcome this obstacle.”

He added that balancing dance and academic commitments has been a concern, particularly for students writing final exams.

Despite these challenges, the school has enjoyed notable successes beyond competitions. Their participation in the Dance Expo community outreach programme at Fourways Mall helped raise their profile and attract new students.

Looking ahead, Nene’s vision remains ambitious. He said their ultimate goal is to give the kids the opportunity to represent South Africa on the global stage – in Spain, Serbia, or America.

“It’s a dream come true for most of them. To achieve this, we aim to continue competing overseas and exploring innovative fundraising strategies. We’re not just teaching dance, we’re building confidence, discipline, and a sense of community. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved, and I know our best years are still ahead.”
