Varsity College player seizes opportunity he couldn’t pass up
Driven by the legacy of soccer legend Jomo Sono, Varsity College football star Moloko Manthata is taking the league by storm.
“I want to help my team win leagues as well as tournaments, and create memories that will last a lifetime.” These words from Moloko Manthata, soccer player, encapsulates his passion for sports.
With a lifelong love affair with soccer, Manthata has worked tirelessly to hone his craft, earning numerous accolades along the way, including three consecutive Player of the Year awards .
“Growing up, soccer was more than just a game to me; it was a way to connect with people, challenge myself, and express my creativity. As I got older, I realized that playing at the college level would be a way to take my game to the next level, both athletically and academically. The opportunity to compete against some of the best talent in the country, while earning a degree, was something I couldn’t pass up.”
Manthata, who plays for the Varsity College in Waterfall, said he has big dreams and aspirations for his team on the field this year. He said his goals for his college soccer career are to not only improve as a player but also to contribute to the team’s success.
“I want to continue to develop my skills, particularly in terms of my vision on the field and my ability to read the game. Beyond that, I aim to leave a positive impact on my team’s culture, work ethic, and mentality.”

Manthata cites Jomo Sono, a soccer legend, as his greatest inspiration. Although he never got to witness Sono’s skills firsthand, watching videos of his iconic matches had a profound impact on Manthata’s own playing style

“His skill, vision, and leadership left a lasting impact on me. I had the privilege of playing in the development team for Jomo Cosmos, which gave me an even deeper understanding of his approach to the game. His ability to read the field, make precise decisions, and balance creativity with discipline has shaped my playing style and how I approach each match. His legacy continues to inspire me every time I step on the field and I hope to leave behind a lasting legacy as well.”
He said the highlight of his latest game was the IIE derby MSA vs VC. “We came into the game as underdogs but definitely gave them a run for their money and ended the game as a draw with a man down since the first half of the game.

“Our last couple results was a mixture of draws and wins but mainly wins. I think, definitely, that will have a positive impact on our performance going forward as a team as we are currently working towards gaining promotion.”
The biggest matchups he said he is looking forward to this season is the NXTGEN and IIE MSA. “We have a point to prove to those two teams. My expectations for the season is nothing less than what the management and coaches put forward to us which is to win the league.”
