Witkoppen Clinic assures public of continued care

Witkoppen Clinic is defying the odds to keep its doors open and its commitment to community health.

Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ foreign policy has led to a 90-day withdrawal of USAID funding to South African NGOs in the health sector.

This aid freeze was announced by the President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (Pepfar) on January 28 and affects primarily HIV/Aids clinics.

Pepfar, a US government initiative under USAID, plays a crucial role in funding HIV/Aids programmes in South Africa. The temporary funding withdrawal puts these programmes at risk, potentially disrupting life-saving treatment for millions of people.

However, despite being heavily reliant on international funding, Witkoppen Clinic has managed to maintain its operations.
“The recent events reported in the media have impacted us, however, we are putting plans in place to find a solution,” said the executive director of the clinic Dr Jean Bassett.“

Currently, Witkoppen Clinic is operational because of a diverse funding base from government, private and corporate support.

“Witkoppen Clinic continues to care for every patient as in the past. We encourage patients to continue visiting our healthcare facilities. Do not compromise your healthcare; our doors remain open, and our dedicated team is ready to provide the care you need.”

The clinic provides essential health and social services, including disease management, maternal care, family planning, HIV and TB treatment, and mental health support.

Bassett said Witkoppen Clinic was very grateful for the community’s understanding during this time.

“Our main priority has always been and will continue to be, ensuring that our patients receive the best healthcare and social services possible. We are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of care and ensuring that every patient who walks through our doors receives the attention and treatment they deserve.”
