Fourways is in Danger and councillor demands fixes
Ward 115 Councillor highlights the urgent safety risks posed by incomplete repairs and unsafe open excavations, demanding accountability and action from JW and the JRA.

Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe has expressed deep concerns over the deteriorating state of his ward, which is plagued by unsafe excavations and potholes.
These works, often resulting from necessary repairs such as pipe bursts and cable maintenance, have created perilous conditions for residents.
It has been seven weeks since an excavation has been left unattended at the intersection of Robin and Alexander avenues, causing ongoing concern for the residents of Fourways.

Joburg Water excavated to repair a burst pipe and had only filled half of the gaping hole, posing a significant safety risk to motorists and pedestrians, Van Der Merwe said, “Although we’ve seen some progress, having half of the excavation still open is unacceptable and continues to put residents at risk.”
He said he had contacted Joburg Water for answers regarding the situation and was informed that the issue had been handed over to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) for further action.
However, he added JRA said they were still waiting for confirmation from Joburg Water before they could proceed. “This back-and-forth between Joburg Water and JRA is frustrating and is causing unnecessary delays.”

Another excavation at the intersection of Conduit and Government roads has remained unattended for the past eight months.
“This excavation has become a hazard that nobody seems willing to address. It’s been eight months, and we are treating this like a permanent feature in our neighbourhood. This is unacceptable. Every time I follow up, it feels like I’m getting put on hold indefinitely.
“This is an essential part of our community, and we deserve better. There needs to be accountability and clear communication on when this will be resolved.”
He also highlighted the issue of potholes such as those on Enslin and Oosterland avenues in Douglasdale, “It’s a dangerous situation. We have open holes that pose serious risks to the safety of pedestrians and vehicles alike. Every day, I am worried that someone is going to get hurt. This needs immediate attention.”
Van Der Merwe’s frustration is compounded by an ongoing issue with accountability. “It’s like playing a game of blame, I just want to know who is accountable for these hazardous excavations, potholes, leaking fire hydrants and malfunctioning traffic lights. The residents deserve safer streets and they should not have to navigate through this chaos.”

Fourways Review reached out to JRA and Joburg Water for the right of reply on February 5 and 6.
Puleng Mopeli of Joburg Water confirmed they received the inquiry and said, “Received and sent to the operations department.”
No further response was received from Joburg Water and JRA before publishing.
