JRA agrees to work with Gauteng transport department to fix broken traffic lights

The Johannesburg Road Agency has released an official statement announcing their plans to address the repair of traffic lights at key road intersections. This is after it agreed to work with Gauteng Roads And Transport Department.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has come into a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with the Gauteng Provincial Department of Roads and Transport (GPDRT) to upgrade and maintain traffic signals on provincial roads.

As part of the agreement, the JRA will take over the management of 275 signalised intersections currently managed by the Gauteng Province, adding to the 2 023 intersections already under its management.

The upgrades will focus on key economic and major routes, including Winnie Mandela Drive, Beyers Naudé Drive, and Chris Hani Road. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion, enhance road safety, and incorporate advanced technologies to optimize traffic flow.

JRA CEO, Zweli Nyathi, welcomed the agreement while adding that this is a significant milestone following extensive discussions between the two entities.

“Consolidating all traffic lights in Johannesburg under the JRA’s management will streamline repairs, replacements, and maintenance efforts, ensuring the continued safe and efficient operation of designated traffic signals.”

Nyathi said the collaboration between the JRA and GPDRT will benefit all road users, particularly in high-traffic areas.

“Many of these intersections provide access to the City’s M1 and M2 motorways and national freeways. It is essential to minimize traffic disruptions and inconveniences to road users, thereby promoting smoother mobility throughout the city.”

The project is expected to benefit all road users, particularly in high-traffic areas, and reflects the JRA’s commitment to improving Johannesburg’s road infrastructure.

Gauteng Head of Department for Roads and Transport Dr Thulani Mdadane said the agreement is critical step in the restoration of traffic light services to improve safety and facilitate mobility in and around the city.

“As part of the agreement, the Johannesburg Roads Agency will be tasked with, amongst others, pole painting; reflector cleaning and globe replacement; repairs to traffic lights and related equipment; repairs to cabling; repairs to signal heads and poles as well as fuse replacement.”

JRA urges motorists to remain patient and exercise caution while navigating affected intersections.
