Over 503 suspects arrested during Operation Shanela in Joburg district

Lieutenant Colonel Mpho Tshetlhane said these arrests were music to the ears of the police's acting district commissioner of Joburg who applauded the men in blue.

The police in Johannesburg continued to root out criminals by arresting more than 503 suspects and recovering more than five unlicensed firearms during operations that were conducted across the district from March 7-9.

The district conducted a multidisciplinary Operation Shanela comprising other law enforcement agencies that included the Department of Home Affairs, Department of Community Safety, JMPD, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, Community in Blue Patrollers and private security companies across Diepsloot and Doornkop policing precinct.

The corporate communication coordinator of the district Lieutenant Colonel Mpho Tshetlhane said the Operation resulted in 65 suspects being arrested for various crimes ranging from possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of drugs, dealing in liquor without a licence, armed robbery, driving under the influence of liquor, and illegal immigrants.

Twelve additional suspects were arrested for drunk and driving on March 9 during an operation, which was conducted in Diepsloot.

“Forty-two suspects were arrested during high-density operations, and 197 were arrested during station commander’s operations, which were conducted at different stations across the district,” he said. “In Eldorado Park, the police arrested five suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and recovered five pistols.

“While conducting a stop and search operation in Protea Glen, the police recovered two stolen vehicles, a Toyota Fortuner, and a Toyota Spacio, including a hijacked VW Polo. The detectives also traced and arrested 191 suspects during operations conducted across the district.”

Brigadier Molefi Tsotsotso, the acting district commissioner of Joburg applauded the members and the other law enforcement agencies for their hard work and commitment in their efforts to combat crime across the district, especially the removal of unlicensed firearms from communities, which contribute to violent crimes.
