More flooding at Platina Bridge, but it is open to public use

Concerns grow over the Platina Bridge as recent flooding reveals significant structural issues. While safety measures are implemented, the timeline for repairs remains uncertain.

Recent flooding, on March 05, has once again raised concerns about the structural integrity of the Platina Bridge, a crucial transit point for both motorists and pedestrians.

Following a significant flooding event on March 7, 2023, inspections revealed alarming instability in the bridge’s steel framework, primarily due to extensive rusting of the precast portal culverts.

In response to these concerns, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has cordoned off the unsafe areas of the bridge and taken proactive measures to enhance safety. “We have repositioned existing barriers and installed additional ones to control traffic flow and ensure public safety. We aim to protect both motorists and pedestrians while we address the structural issues,” said JRA acting head of planning Khayalethu Gqibitole.

The recent flooding has left many residents questioning the timeline for necessary repairs. Two years have now passed since the original flood, and many residents are eager for concrete updates.

According to Gqibitole, designs for the bridge’s rehabilitation are on track for completion by June. “Once the designs are approved, we can allocate a budget for construction. While we do not have specific dates yet, repairs will be prioritised in the upcoming financial year.”

Established estimates for the rehabilitation of the Platina Bridge were pegged at around R24m after the first flooding. JRA has received concept designs from consultants, which have now undergone a review process. “We’ve made comments on the proposed solutions and are currently awaiting the service provider to address these before resubmitting for approval,” Gqibitole explained.

Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe confirmed that the bridge is now open for public use. “JRA cleared the debris blocking the entrance to the bridge and placed extra barricades to provide extra safety for vehicles and pedestrians. All work was done by JRA, and they opened the bridge.”

While the bridge has been opened following recent repairs, officials continue to urge pedestrians to use extra caution when crossing. “For residents who need to use the bridge, it is safe, but I recommend they remain vigilant.”

When asked about ongoing maintenance plans while waiting for full repairs, JRA confirmed that there are currently no detailed plans in place, beyond the commitment made by the MMC of Transport, Kenny Kunene, to prioritise the Platina Bridge as the third most critical bridge to repair in the city.
