Three good Samaritans have joined forces with the Fourways Main Reef Rotary Club to drive positive change in their community.

Queen Boikhutso, Marcia Cannon, and Angus King recently joined the esteemed Fourways Main Reef Rotary Club during a ceremony held at the picturesque Norscot Manor.

The trio decided to become part of the global network of like-minded individuals who share a common goal: To make a positive impact in the world.

“This is exactly what I wanted,” said Boikhutso. “Before I came to Johannesburg, I was in Port Elizabeth. I used to see the Rotary signboard from Nelson Mandela Metro University, where I used to work at the disability unit. Then I decided to Google Rotary and saw that what they did was similar to what I did – I’m a community server. I like to assist where there is a need.”

As the newest members of the Fourways Main Reef Rotary Club, the three have pledged to uphold the organisation’s guiding principles, including the four-way test: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

King said he is thrilled about his decision to join the club. He said he believed in the power of community and service, and was looking for a meaningful way to contribute more intentionally. “When I learned more about Rotary’s values and the incredible work they do, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. I was drawn to the idea of joining a network of people who are proactive, compassionate, and service-driven. The opportunity to collaborate on impactful projects and grow personally and professionally made it an easy yes.”

While Cannon said: “I feel very good joining the Rotary. I have always worked in communities. With a passion to see positive changes: especially vulnerable children, youth, and adults. I ran children and youth programmes at my church and in communities to empower the youngsters. The goal is to help shape their lives so that they can be responsible and accountable members of society.”

The president of the club, Ebhodaghe Iyere, said: “Expanding our membership strengthens our ability as volunteers to make a meaningful impact in our local community. Rotary’s mission to create lasting change, aligns with its seven areas of focus, which support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation, supporting education, saving mothers and children, growing local economies, and protecting the environment.

He added that by embracing these global priorities, “Our club continues to drive positive change, demonstrating that when we grow Rotary, we grow our ability to do good in the world.”
