Watch: Deputy president Mashatile’s convoy ‘caught on camera’ driving on wrong side of the road
A local councillor worries about how a person of his caliber can endanger people's lives like that. She said this is not the first time the deputy president behaved this way.
Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe called out the deputy president, Paul Mashatile, who she claims was caught driving on the wrong side of the road on April 8.
Deppe said Mashatile was coming from his Waterfall Equestrian Estate when his convoy was caught on dash camera by one of the motorists who posted the video in the community group chat to alert the councillor.

While Fourways Review has not been able to confirm that it was indeed Mashatile’s convoy, Deppe is adamant that it was. “Because he lives at Waterfall Equestrian Estate and always uses the back entrance whenever he is in Johannesburg… this is not the first time that he has done it,” she alleged.

She added, “Who does he think he is? I don’t think it is a matter of safety, he is just flexing his status as a deputy president and that is endangering the lives of people on our roads. If it was an ordinary individual doing that, they were going to be arrested by the JMPD.”
Deppe asked what could possibly warrant the presence of six flashing light vehicles, especially as they navigate provincial roads in a manner that endangers public safety? The residents of Midrand and surrounding communities deserve to know the reasons behind Mr. Mashatile’s actions.”

When approached for comment, the spokesperson for the deputy president, Keith Khoza said, “This matter can only be handled by the police as they are responsible for the security of the the deputy president.”
He did not confirm nor deny that it was Mashatile’s convoy.

The JMPD’s Xolani Fihla said the metro police department is unable to report on this situation and suggested contacting the deputy president’s office for an explanation of which Fourways Review did.
“As previously explained to the Councillor, the JMPD has no authority over the Presidential Protection Service. The Deputy President’s escort consisted of emergency vehicles, and the video that has been circulating confirms the absence of any JMPD vehicles,” said Fihla.
