SA Sprint Championships showcase talent at Roodeplaat Dam

South Africa’s top paddlers showcased their skills at the exhilarating Sprint Championships, with promising athletes vying for a spot on the national team for prestigious international events.

The South African Sprint Championships brought together paddlers from across the nation for three exhilarating days of racing from April 4 to 6.

The event served not only as a test of speed and skill but also as a selection platform for athletes aiming to represent South Africa in upcoming international sprint competitions.

Sprint racing, known for its short yet intense races, is a distinguished Olympic discipline and enjoys high esteem on the global stage. Among the notable competitors was Gunther Grune from Fourways, a member of the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, who achieved commendable results in various categories.

Grune finished 7th overall in the Sub Grand Master age category and teamed up with Richard Cook to secure 5th place in the doubles event. Cook also demonstrated strong performance, placing 4th in the K1 semi-final for the 100m distance and 6th in the 1 000m heat for the Men’s 35+ age group.

Ultimately, Grune concluded the championships as the 2nd overall finisher in the Sub Grand Master category, while Cook followed closely in 3rd place.

Another standout at the event was Alexia Smedmor, a Fourways resident and learner at Parktown High School for Girls. Alexia finished in an impressive 5th place overall in the U18 category.

Her accolades included a 4th place finish in the doubles race alongside Jessica Murray, a 3rd place finish in the Girls 1 000m event, and a 6th place finish in the final race.

Jennie Dallas, the media liaison of the Gauteng Canoe Union, reflected on the event. “The South African Sprint Championships showcased some of the finest talent in paddling. The performances we witnessed were nothing short of inspiring, and we are excited to see many of these athletes represent our country on the international stage.”
