Local equine centre brings pony rides to Pitseng preschoolers
Cavaliere Equine Centre is making childhood memories by sponsoring monthly pony rides and activities for preschoolers.

Cavaliere Equine Centre is sponsoring monthly pony rides and activities for Pitseng ECD Centre.
The owner of Cavaliere Equine, Claudia Graunker, said this ongoing partnership aimed to introduce children to the world of horses in a safe and engaging environment, fostering early development and a sense of responsibility.
Graunker said, “With our first visit [to Pitseng], I was struck by the enthusiasm and excitement from the children. They were such a well-behaved group, and I suggested to the preschool owner that they could come have pony rides and participate in other gross motor skill activities once a month, at no cost to the school.”

She explained the inspiration for this partnership. “The owner of the school contacted me, and after meeting them and welcoming the children to our yard, their curiosity and interest were just too endearing to ignore.
“I want to be part of their learning experience and offer them an opportunity to experience horses and gain a better understanding of these wonderful animals.”
While the primary focus was on the children’s learning and enjoyment, Graunker emphasised the broader benefits of the programme. Although it might not directly benefit the community in a wide sense, the children will learn more about horses and how to care for them. Since they are very young, the activities are quite basic but meaningful.”

Safety is a top priority during the rides. “Children wear riding helmets provided by Cavaliere, and they have closed shoes on. A groom leads the pony, and a staff member walks alongside to ensure they sit safely, feet in the stirrups and securely on the saddle. We take every precaution to make sure their experience is both fun and safe.”
The activities are designed to promote various skills and developmental benefits. “The first lessons focus on listening to instructions and following them, which enhances their ability to pay attention. They develop balance, learn about left and right, and interact with animals, all of which contribute to their physical, mental, and emotional growth.
Rides promote physical fitness, build confidence, encourage social skills, and foster responsibility and empathy.”

Looking ahead, Graunker has plans to expand the activities offered to the children. “I want to introduce ball skills while they wait for their turn to ride, and they will also have the chance to groom our mini ponies. I’ll work with the teachers to develop activities that complement their learning goals and make the experience even more enriching.”
