Jonathan Roxmouth is back on home soil, singing his favourite Broadway hits
After melting international audiences' hearts in Phantom of the Opera and other major productions, multi-award-winning theatre sensation Jonathan Roxmouth returns to Johannesburg for a strictly limited season of My Favourite Broadway at Montecasino’s Teatro.
Fresh from sold-out seasons abroad, multi-award-winning theatre star and South Africa’s very own Phantom of the Opera, Jonathan Roxmouth, returns home to Johannesburg for a limited season of My Favourite Broadway at Montecasino’s Teatro in Fourways.
Roxmouth revealed what it means to be back performing for South African audiences and why this show, featuring some of Broadway’s most iconic musical numbers, is particularly close to his heart. “For the past, three or four years, I’ve been overseas quite a bit, doing other shows. I’ve been doing Phantom of the Opera internationally. I’ve been performing in… Something like five other countries. So, I spent a lot of time away.
“Coming home now, I wanted to do something, not just to have a homecoming party, but to see the audiences again. I’ve missed them, having performed for other audiences around the world. That specific South African response is what I’m looking forward to, and reconnecting with home audiences.

“The second part is, I haven’t sung musical theatre stuff in this theatre since Evita in 2017, so, I thought it was high time. We decided to take all my favorite songs, from all my favorite musicals, put them together, and not just sing them, but perform them with a 32-piece orchestra. That doesn’t happen a lot. It was just one of those perfect storms that all came together.
“Performing with live musicians, as opposed to a backing track or just a keyboard, you sing better because they force you to be more musical. You’re hearing a lot more stuff, so you sing differently. It’s almost like if you go into a small room and there are three people talking, you can just talk to them. Now, go into a crowded bar with everybody talking, you have to talk louder to be heard. With an orchestra, it’s not just people talking loudly, it’s people playing beautiful music. So, it inspires you as you perform. It makes you better.”

Presented by Howard Events, My Favourite Broadway runs for just eight performances across two weekends from July 25 to July 27, and again from August 1 to August 3.
With a full symphonic orchestra behind him and a setlist drawn from the shows that shaped his journey, Roxmouth is back where he belongs on home soil, centre stage, and ready to remind audiences why he remains one of South Africa’s most beloved musical theatre stars.
