Councillor vows to address deputy president’s alleged 16-car convoy

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe is speaking out against the excessive convoy escorting Deputy President Paul Mashatile through Waterfall Equestrian Estate, raising questions about the impact on their peaceful community.

Residents of Ward 132 have once again raised concerns to councillor Annette Deppe over, what they describe as, an excessive security convoy accompanying Deputy President Paul Mashatile as he exits the back gate of the Waterfall Equestrian Estate.
According to Deppe, a resident recently counted a total of 16 motorbikes and vehicles in the procession, an occurrence that has left many in the community questioning the necessity and impact of such displays.

She said the size and frequency of these convoys have made residents uneasy, and said the noise and disruption undermine the peaceful nature of the suburb.
Deppe acknowledged the mounting frustration and has vowed to address the matter through official channels. “I am committed to addressing the understandable concerns of the residents regarding the frequency and scale of these occurrences. It is imperative that the security protocols respect both the safety of public officials and the tranquillity of our communities.”
While acknowledging the importance of safeguarding the deputy president, Deppe said that there is a need for a better balance between state security measures and the rights of residents. “I will be engaging with relevant governmental departments to seek clarity on the necessity of such large-scale escorts, and to ensure there is a balance between required security measures and the needs of our local residents.”
Deppe urged residents to remain patient as investigations continue. She promised to keep the community updated as more information becomes available.
This is not the first time the community has reported sightings of such convoys, with similar concerns being flagged in the past. In fact, in April, Deppe called out Mashatile’s convoy for allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road.

Deppe said, Mashatile was coming from his Waterfall Equestrian Estate home when his convoy was caught on dash camera by a motorist, who posted the video on the community group chat to alert the councillor.
While Fourways Review has not been able to confirm that it was indeed Mashatile’s convoy, Deppe is adamant that it was. “Because he lives at Waterfall Equestrian Estate, and always uses the back entrance whenever he is in Johannesburg… This is not the first time that he has done it.”

Keith Khoza, spokesperson for Mashatile’s office, said, “The matter can only be dealt with the South African Police Services .”
