13-year-old MMA star needs support to compete for SA in Abu Dhabi
Discipline, heart, and talent, Tiano Frau has it all, and now the chance to fight for South Africa on the world stage. But the final round before take-off? Raising the funds to make it to Abu Dhabi.
Tiano Frau has achieved what many athletes only dream of at the age of 13; he has been officially selected to represent South Africa at the MMA Youth World Championship in Abu Dhabi, taking place from July 20 to 27, 2025.
This global event is considered the pinnacle of youth competition in the sport. Hundreds of young fighters from around the world will descend on the UAE capital, vying for medals, national pride, and international recognition.
For Tiano, the chance to compete on that stage is the culmination of years of dedication and the start of an even bigger dream.
“My mom signed me up for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu not just for self-defence, but also to help me build self-discipline, planning skills, and strategic thinking.

“Muay Thai and MMA were part of the training schedule at the gym, and I instantly loved it. My mom also wanted to make sure that one day, as a man, I’d be able to protect my future family. MMA inspired me to follow my passion for the sport and to stay active while learning important life skills.”
Tiano trains daily and competes regularly, balancing his athletic ambitions with his schoolwork. But for him, the love for martial arts goes far deeper than just winning.
“What I love most about MMA is learning self-defence and competing in big competitions. What drives me to keep pushing myself and be the best is making mistakes during fights because I get to learn from them. Each fight helps me grow, and I train harder to improve and become the best.”
Representing his country is both a privilege and a stepping stone toward a future career in professional sport.
“I feel excited because I’m about to show the world what I can do. I’m representing my country, and it’s a huge opportunity to help me become a successful pro athlete in the future.”

His mother, Nastascia, has been there every step of the way, behind the scenes and beside the ring.
“I’ve always supported Tiano in every way I can. Driving him to and from daily training sessions, seeing to his nutrition, helping him prepare for competitions, and standing by him through every step of his journey. But at the end of the day, the commitment, discipline, and talent are all his. He’s the one who shows up, puts in the work, and stays consistent. I’m just here to encourage him and cheer him on from the sidelines, and I couldn’t be prouder of the young man he’s becoming, both in and out of the cage.”

Now, just weeks before he’s due to fly to Abu Dhabi, the family is facing the final hurdle raising funds to make the trip possible. The original cost to cover everything from medical clearances and competition entry to visas, flights, accommodation, uniforms, and meals was R33 680.
Thanks to a few sponsors and the generosity of family members, that total has dropped to R24 000, but the clock is ticking.
The remaining amount will be allocated toward flights, accommodation, and some meals. The family is now appealing to the public and businesses who may want to support a determined young athlete on the verge of a life-changing opportunity.
