Possible light at the end of the Bryan Brook leak

Despite repeated complaints and site visits, the open trench leaking water outside Bryan Brook Estate on Witkoppen Road remains unresolved, but now we know that GPDRT is responsible, and they’ve vowed to act.

Fourways Review has been reaching out to Johannesburg Water (JW) for comment on the persistent water leak and open trench outside Bryan Brook Estate on Witkoppen Road since July 9, and no response has been received to date.

Residents and motorists continue to express frustration as the excavation, which has been leaking water for nearly two years, worsens traffic congestion, damages the road surface, and drags down the appearance of the Paulshof area.

Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy provided an update, explaining that while JW and Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) have been engaged multiple times, the responsibility for resolving the issue ultimately falls to the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GPDRT), as Witkoppen Road is a provincial road.

“I have spoken to JW, JRA, and now GPDRT, with whom the issue sits. The manager responsible has indicated she will inspect the site with her engineer next week to determine the cause and source of the water, which has been confirmed as fresh groundwater.”

Reddy acknowledged residents’ frustration with the drawn-out process. “As annoying and frustrating as the current situation is, we are unfortunately at the behest of GPDRT and must await the outcome of their investigation. At this stage, there is no timeline or estimated time of resolution.”

The leak, which began as a small leak, has turned into a constant trickle that has damaged the already stressed Witkoppen Road, creating potholes and slowing down traffic, especially during peak hours. Residents and trustees of Bryan Brook Estate fear that the ongoing issue will continue to affect property values and local businesses.

Fourways Review will continue to follow up with GPDRT and JW. More information will be provided once it becomes available.
