City cracks down on illegal informal settlements in Fourways
Mayor Morero leads a joint operation with JMPD, SAPS, and Home Affairs.
A joint operation led by Executive Mayor Councillor Dada Morero is currently underway today (July 25) in Fourways Ginger Park informal settlement as the City moves to enforce by-laws and dismantle illegal informal settlements in the area.

The operation, which involves the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), SAPS, and the Department of Home Affairs, aims to address illegal land invasions and the rapid spread of informal structures on unsuitable land in parts of the northern suburbs.

The City has indicated that this operation is part of broader efforts to enforce bylaws and ensure orderly development while addressing concerns raised by residents about safety, sanitation, and the use of public and private land for illegal structures.

City has no plans yet for Fourways’ informal settlements
Just one day ago, MMC for Human Settlements, Mlungisi Mabaso, says the City of Johannesburg currently has no immediate plans to formalise informal settlements in Fourways until the necessary legal and land assessment processes are completed.

Speaking on the matter, Mabaso explained that many informal settlements emerge because desperate residents end up purchasing stands illegally due to the ongoing shortage of affordable housing in Johannesburg.

“These settlements often happen under very unfortunate circumstances. People are taking advantage of the vulnerability of residents who are looking for places to stay.”
