Leaping Frog takes a ‘no-nonsense’ stand against crime this time

Following a wave of smash-and-grabs and attempted hijackings, Leaping Frog Shopping Centre has launched a no-nonsense safety campaign, partnering with local security and police forums to send a clear message to criminals.

After a string of unsettling criminal incidents, ranging from attempted hijackings, card fraud scams, to smash-and-grabs, Leaping Frog Shopping Centre in Fourways has taken a stand to reassure its patrons.

On July 26, just a day after payday, when criminal activity in the area tends to spike, the centre launched a no-nonsense anti-crime campaign.

Partnering with the Douglasdale Community Police Forum, Night Guard Security, and the Fourways Improvement District (FID), the shopping centre rolled out a high-visibility security operation to clamp down on opportunistic crime and restore public confidence.

The centre management said the move is a direct response to growing safety concerns, and they are determined to ensure the centre is no longer seen as an easy target.

“This campaign it’s just to show awareness that Night Guard is our new service provider on site for security, joining forces with FID and the CPF, just to show that the community is also obviously involved and keeping everyone safe,” said Qume Tocknell-Heenop, the marketing manager of the centre.

Tocknell-Heenop acknowledged the growing concern among residents on social media, particularly local Facebook groups, and emphasised that the campaign is a direct response.

Speaking on how the centre is handling community feedback, she said, “We take it from where it comes. We always respond with a nice, positive thing to say, because not all the stories are always true.”

Tocknell-Heenop recounted two specific incidents that were intercepted before any harm was done. “The first one was [allegedly] a rental car that had different number plates. The car was in the parking area, but police and security had already taken it. I’m not sure if it was stolen or what it was used for, but the authorities handled it. The last one was an attempted hijacking, but Night Guard, before anything happened, responded swiftly.”

She praised the proactive setup behind the scenes. She added from what she understood from FID, there are road cameras that capture everything. Night Guard is linked to the radio system, so they know when guards check in and can respond quickly to anyone who enters.
She said Night Guard is stationed 24/7, and their emergency numbers have been circulated among tenants and the public.
