Councillor questions JRA on poor-quality, quickly fading road marking paint

With markings fading faster than they can be repainted, Ward 94 councillor David Foley warns that drivers are left guessing where to go on the roads.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley has taken aim at Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) over road markings that he says are fading far too quickly and putting lives at risk.

Standing on Peter Wenning Road, just off Winnie Mandela Drive, Foley pointed to a bend in the road where the lines are barely visible. “If you’ve got two cars coming towards each other and they don’t know exactly where to drive, you’re going to have an accident.”

According to Foley, the problem lies with the paint the road agency is using. “You can put it on this week. Next week it’s a bit faded, then, in three weeks or four weeks’ time, it doesn’t look like it was even put on.

“JRA needs to look at the quality of paint and where they’re sourcing it from, because it’s not working.”

He warned that the risk is even higher in rainy conditions, when water washes over the road and drivers can’t see the markings at all. “Accidents will happen.”

Foley believes road paint should last at least four to five months before it needs to be redone. “If it’s the right quality, that’s how long it should hold, but right now, it looks like they’re painting every couple of weeks. We need something that lasts, and keeps cars in the right place.”

As an example, Foley pointed to a white line just metres away on the road. “If you just look down the road, you can’t even see the white line. It’s not even there anymore. Even if they redo this line, in the next three or four weeks it’ll probably be in the same state again.”

The road agency was approached for comment. An update will be provided once it becomes available.
