Mama Gail Koeberg’s commitment to sewing and community upliftment earns her national recognition, inspiring hope and resilience in Magaliessig.

Local community champion Mama Gail Koeberg was recently recognised for her dedication and tireless commitment to uplifting herself and her community at the Clover Mama Afrika Awards Summit, where she received the Best Sewing Star Award.

The awards evening, held to honour the hard work and passion of the Clover Mama Afrika network, showcased the ongoing efforts of women who continue to upskill themselves through training and courses, while inspiring change in their communities.

Mama Gail has over 19 years of experience working with community empowerment projects. Her centre provides a haven for destitute and abused women, children, and men, with the goal of rehabilitation and restoration. Mama Gail possesses skills in counselling, administration, training, cooking, baking, and knitting.

For Mama Gail, the award is more than a trophy. “Being recognised at the Clover Mama Afrika Summit was both humbling and deeply encouraging. It affirmed the value of the work we do and reminded me that even small acts of service can have a meaningful impact.”

Mama Gail’s journey began when she saw a pressing need in her community. “Many families struggled to afford new clothing or basic tailoring services. By teaching sewing, I hoped to offer a practical solution: Empowering individuals to mend garments, create affordable clothing, and ultimately build a source of income.”

This vision has already transformed lives in Magaliessig and beyond. Mama Gail recalls a young woman who, after learning to sew at her centre, confidently began selling her handmade garments at a local market. “She told me learning to sew had not only helped her financially, but also restored her sense of purpose.”

She shared that while the journey has been inspiring, it has not been without its challenges. From high electricity costs to vehicle maintenance across rough terrain, Mama Gail and her team have had to find creative solutions. “We diversified our income streams through the bakery and sewing centre, and sought donations, sponsorships, and community fundraising initiatives. It’s been a collective effort, driven by determination and hope.”

Mama Gail hopes her journey will inspire other women to begin uplifting themselves and others, no matter their circumstances. “Start with what you have, no matter how small. Your skills, your story, your strength, they are powerful tools. Never stop learning, and always look for the hidden potential in others.”

Winning the Best Sewing Star Award is not only a recognition of her efforts; it’s a motivation to expand her mission. “It inspires me to explore innovative training methods and create more sustainable income-generating opportunities. I am so grateful for all the support and continued training I have received from Clover Mama Afrika.”
