Good intentions may break municipal by-laws
Even a good time can turn into a bad one when it comes to municipal by-laws. Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe warns residents that ignoring these by-laws can lead to fines, complaints, and more.
Even well-meaning actions in your neighbourhood could land you in trouble with municipal by-laws, according to Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe.
Deppe has urged residents to be more mindful of municipal by-laws, warning that many community members unknowingly break rules that can lead to fines, complaints, or even liability. “Many residents don’t realise that their everyday actions, even when well-intentioned, can put them on the wrong side of municipal regulations. By understanding and respecting these by-laws, we can build a safer and more considerate community.”

She said, among the most common contraventions are residents’ associations or individuals attempting to fill potholes themselves. While often done out of frustration with service delays, this is not permitted. “Unauthorised road repairs can create liability issues, and may even complicate future maintenance. We understand the frustration, but the correct process is always to log service requests with the city.”
Noise disturbances, especially from late-night parties and gatherings, remain another frequent issue. “Excessive noise is one of the top complaints we receive. People deserve peace in their own homes, and persistent disturbances can result in fines.”
Illegal parking, including blocking driveways or leaving vehicles on sidewalks, also disrupts daily life in the ward. “Parking in unauthorised spaces not only inconveniences others; it can lead to vehicles being fined or towed.”

She said another one is waste disposal practices, with some residents leaving household or garden refuse on curb sides outside of collection times. “Dumping waste incorrectly is not only unsightly; it’s also a health risk. Sticking to collection schedules prevents penalties and keeps our neighbourhood clean.”
Finally, pet owners are reminded to keep animals under control. “Allowing pets to roam freely often leads to complaints. Whether it’s damage to property or noise disturbances, owners will be held accountable.”
Deppe encouraged residents to familiarise themselves with by-laws and to play an active role in upholding them. “Our goal isn’t to punish, but to educate. Awareness and respect for the rules make for a community where everyone feels safe, respected, and proud to live.”
