Ward 93 councillor confronts truck drivers on Sunrise Boulevard
Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy went head-to-head with truck drivers parking along Sunrise Road in Pine Slopes.
Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy took a direct approach on September 16 when he confronted a group of truck drivers stationed along Sunrise Boulevard in Pineslopes.
The drivers have long gathered at the spot, hoping to be hired for construction or transport work, a practice that has drawn repeated complaints from residents, and frequent interventions by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), mostly called by Reddy.

Reddy, who said many drivers had ignored his calls in the past, decided to meet them face-to-face to hear their concerns.
Among those he spoke to was Javengwa Moyo, who revealed he has been at the same location for almost ten years.

Moyo explained that the men are not simply loitering, but waiting for work opportunities to support their families. “What we need is a proper place to stay and operate from,” Moyo told the Fourways Review. “If authorities can give us a site where we can park and attract clients, we can continue with our work without causing problems.”

Moyo added that, while online job platforms have been suggested, many drivers remain reluctant, fearing scams and unreliable deals. Instead, they prefer direct, in-person contact with potential clients.
Importantly, he said that any designated site must be close to Fourways, where their customer base is located, otherwise they risk losing livelihoods.
Reddy acknowledged the drivers’ pleas, but insisted that by-laws cannot be ignored. “Residents have been raising concerns for a while now. It is illegal for trucks to park in public spaces and on roads like this. Enforcement has to happen to restore order.”
