Fourways councillor calls for community to back safety initiative

Fourways residents are asked to join a united safety drive that promises more patrols, stronger law enforcement support, and cleaner, safer streets for all.

Fourways residents are being urged to come together in a collective push to improve safety and restore peace of mind in the suburb.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley has called on households to support the proposed Fourways Improvement District (FID), an initiative aimed at creating greater security visibility and strengthening co-operation with law enforcement agencies.

FID is a non-profit company that aims to improve security and public service delivery issues, including traffic lights, amongst others, within designated commercial entities, housing estates and complexes, and private homes in Fourways.

“As a community, we need to get involved to ensure security visibility at every intersection to improve safety in the area,” Foley said. “We need to take stronger preventative action and mobilise the enforcement agencies, like the JMPD and SAPS.”

The proposed initiative will require households to contribute R50 a month. “Just more than the cost of a cup of coffee,” Foley explained.

The contributions will fund increased security personnel, better co-ordination with authorities, and visible patrols in and around Fourways.

According to Foley, the benefits go beyond crime prevention.

“If we can flood the area with security personnel, with the JMPD and SAPS on speed dial, everyone will feel safer. You will see more people in the suburbs enjoying life as it should be, and jobs will be created.”

The councillor added that, by encouraging each complex to join, most of which have fewer than 100 units, the initiative could quickly build momentum and extend safe zones beyond individual homes and complexes.

“This is about taking ownership as a community, and making sure Fourways is not just a place to live, but a safe, thriving suburb.”
