City fails to find suitable candidate for Region A director post

More than six months since the post of regional director of Region A became vacant, the city says its recruitment process did not yield a suitable candidate, leaving the region under acting leadership for even longer.

More than six months after the post of Region A regional director became vacant, residents are still waiting for a permanent appointment.

The delay has raised frustrations for Ward 132 and surrounding areas, where service delivery complaints have mounted under acting leadership, according to the councillor Annette Deppe.

When asked this week whether the regional director for Region A had been appointed, and if not, why the process was delayed, as well as when residents could expect the post to be filled City of Johannesburg, spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane confirmed the position remains vacant.

“The recruitment process was run to its ultimate conclusion, however, did not yield a suitable candidate. The city is looking at alternatives to speedily fill the position.”

This comes after the city previously assured residents that the recruitment process was in its closing stages.

In July, Modingoane told Fourways Review that the appointment should be made soon, however, months later, it seems no suitable candidate was found. The post has now been vacant for more than six months, leaving Region A under acting leadership.

Deppe has repeatedly raised concerns, warning earlier this year that the absence of a permanent regional director was creating, what she called a leadership crisis, which had worsened service delivery problems in her ward.

Currently, the acting regional director continues to juggle responsibilities across both Region A and Region E.

The city has admitted the arrangement is not ideal, but pointed to temporary measures, such as assistance from senior managers and the establishment of a War Room to fast-track responses to complaints.
