Diwali lights up hearts and homes across Ward 132

As homes light up and families gather for their Diwali celebrations, Ward 132 residents are reminded to plan accordingly, especially those with furry friends for whom fireworks are a problem.

The glow of Diwali is here. A time when streets light up with flickering lamps, homes fill with the scent of sweet treats, and families gather to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness.

Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is one of the most cherished celebrations in the Hindu calendar, symbolising renewal, hope, and the victory of good over evil.

As the world prepares to mark this vibrant occasion on October 20, Ward 132 councillor Annete Deppe advises the community to enjoy it, while asking for tolerance. “Ward 132 is proud of the rich cultural diversity we enjoy in our suburb, and the unity we show one another. This is one of the reasons Ward 132 stands out as an example to others. In light of this, we ask respect and tolerance towards one another.

“As there is likely to be some fireworks used, between 19:00 and 22:00, we suggest, if you are sensitive to noise or have pets that are, please plan accordingly. We have several vets that can assist you with help for your animals.”

Deppe added, for those celebrating, may the millions of lamps of Diwali illuminate their life with happiness, joy, peace, and health.

Fourways resident Nasheel Dayal said to Fourways Review that Diwali has some historic significance to his tradition, and is special for him because he gets to spend the day with his family. “The day commemorates King Rama’s return to Ayodhya, with Maa Sita, after spending 14 years in exile and defeating the King of Lanka, Ravana.

“Diwali is one of my favourite prayers and celebrations, as there are so much love, colour, light, and sweets all around.”
